Every bottle carries a name: extrait de parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette or cologne. It tells you how much fragrance it contains – and therefore how intense a scent is and how long it stays on the skin. Here's what the terms mean and which concentration suits which occasion.

What does "concentration" mean in perfume?

A perfume consists of aromatic compounds (the perfume oil) and a carrier, usually alcohol. The concentration indicates how much perfume oil it contains. The higher the share, the more intense and usually longer-lasting the scent.

Important: the percentages are industry guidelines. They are not set by law, and every brand interprets them slightly differently.

A special form: alcohol-free perfume oil

In the Middle East, perfume oils have a long tradition. They contain no alcohol – the aromatic compounds are dissolved in oil. Perfume oils are dabbed directly onto the skin, stay close to the body and go a long way. Many people like them because they are alcohol-free. For example Karamat Sultan Perfume Oil or the concentrated Dehn Al Oud Perfume Elixir.

Which concentration suits me?

  • For evenings and special occasions: extrait de parfum or eau de parfum – intense and expressive.
  • For the office and everyday: eau de parfum used sparingly, or eau de toilette – present but not overpowering.
  • For summer and sport: eau de toilette, cologne or body mist – light and fresh.
  • For a scent close to the skin: perfume oil – subtle for others, intense for you.

What affects how long a scent lasts?

Concentration isn't the only factor:

  • Notes: heavy base notes such as oud, amber, musk or woods last longer than fresh citrus notes.
  • Skin: well-moisturised skin holds fragrance better than dry skin.
  • Application: spray or dab onto pulse points such as wrists, neck and inner elbows – and don't rub.
  • Fabrics: on clothes and scarves, fragrance often lasts longer than on skin. Test light or delicate fabrics on a discreet spot first.

FAQ

Is an extrait de parfum always better than an eau de toilette?
Not necessarily. An extrait is more intense, an eau de toilette lighter. Which is better depends on the scent, the occasion and your taste.

Does the same scent smell identical as EdP and EdT?
Not always. Brands often adjust the composition slightly for different concentrations, so the versions can differ.

How much perfume should I apply?
With an extrait, one or two drops or sprays are enough; with an eau de toilette you can use a little more.
